Web Design Tips

What You Need to Build a Website

To start a website project you need four things: a clear goal for the site, your content (text, logo, and photos), the basics like a domain name and contact details, and a few decisions about pages and features. Get those ready and your project moves fast. Gather them as you go, and the timeline stretches. Most delays we see come from missing content, not missing code.

Quick answer: know what the site is for, gather your words and images, and have your domain and brand details on hand before kickoff.

1. A clear goal

Before anything else, answer one question: what should this website do? Book appointments, sell products, generate quote requests, show a portfolio, or simply make you look legitimate. A site built around a goal converts. A site built to “have a website” usually doesn’t. Bring your one main goal and one or two secondary ones.

2. Your content

This is the part that makes or breaks the timeline. Have these ready:

  • Text — what you do, who you serve, and why someone should choose you. A rough draft is fine; a good designer will help shape it.
  • Logo — the highest-quality version you have. No logo yet? That’s a service we offer.
  • Photos — real pictures of your work, team, or products beat stock every time.
  • Reviews and testimonials — social proof that earns trust fast.

If content isn’t ready, that’s the single biggest reason projects run long. See how long it takes to build a website.

3. The basics

A handful of practical items keep the project from stalling at the finish line:

  • Domain name — your web address. Already own one? Have the login handy. Need one? We’ll help you choose and register it.
  • Business details — phone, email, address or service area, and hours.
  • Brand colors and fonts — if you have them. If you don’t, we can build them.
  • Accounts — any existing hosting, email, or social profiles to connect.

4. A few decisions

You don’t need every answer, but having a starting position speeds things up:

  • Pages — a rough list (Home, About, Services, Contact is a fine start).
  • Features — contact form, online booking, store, gallery, blog.
  • Sites you like — two or three examples and what you like about each. This is the fastest way to get the design right the first time.

Don’t have it all? That’s fine

This is a checklist, not a barrier. Most clients show up with some of it, and part of our job is filling the gaps — writing copy, building a logo, taking the guesswork out of hosting. The more you bring, the faster you launch, but you don’t need to have everything figured out before you reach out. Knowing what to ask for matters too; see our questions to ask before hiring a web designer.

FAQ

Do I need to write all the content myself?

No. Bring what you can, even rough notes. A good studio will polish your words or write them for you.

What if I don’t have a logo yet?

We can design one as part of the project, so a missing logo won’t hold you up.

Do I need to buy hosting before we start?

Not necessarily. We’ll recommend reliable hosting and can handle the setup so it’s done right.

How do I pick a domain name?

Keep it short, easy to spell, and tied to your business name. We’ll help you check what’s available and register it.
